Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption of the See - Lamego

The word parish is derived from the Greek for (around) and oikia (home). I mean, what revolves around the house of God, the church.
For this reason, the center of parish life is its parish church. In our case, the Cathedral. Therefore, it is advisable to present the Cathedral in brief strokes.

The Diocese of Lamego is one of the oldest in the country. It is certain that it was already founded in 572, because of a document that mentions it, but some historians argue that it already existed in the 5th century or even in the 3rd.

In the place where the Cathedral is built there was a Chapel dedicated to S. Sebastião. It was there that D. Afonso Henriques ordered the construction of the new Cathedral. First, in Romanesque style, of which only the bell tower remains. Over the centuries it has undergone changes. The façade, with its 3 porches, from the end of the 15th / early 16th century, in a flamboyant Gothic style, stands out, the outer wall of the cloisters, in the Renaissance style. In the 18th century, the body of the church underwent major changes, becoming the way it looks now. Famous are the paintings of the vaults, by Nicolau Nasoni, alluding to scenes from the Old Testament.

But there are many places of worship in our parish, both in the city and in the 3 rural areas: Balsemão, Alvelos and S. Martinho do Souto.
In the city, we have: the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, the Church of Desterro (with a very rich gilt), the Church of Santa Cruz, the Chapel of Espírito Santo, the Chapel of S. Benedito, in Lages, the Chapel of Santa Cruz Cemetery and the Chapels of Nossa Senhora dos Meninos, Sr. dos Aflitos and S. Lázaro, in Bairro da Ponte.
In rural areas there is the ancient Church of S. Pedro de Balsemão (6th century), the Chapels of Nª Srª do Amparo, Nª Srª da Piedade and S. Pedro, in Alvelos, and the Chapel of S. Martinho do Souto.

There are also several private chapels to mention, at least 12.
In addition to these centers of worship, parish life also has two aggregating poles: the João Paulo II Social Center and the Claustros da Sé. parish. In the rooms adjacent to the cloisters there is the parish office and that is where the rehearsals of songs and some parish meetings take place.
The parish also has the parish residence on Rua das Canastras, a set of houses for poor families, the building of the Patronato Nuno Álvares and a land adjoining the parish residence.
