PROCEDURES FOR WEDDINGS

1st Step - Make an appointment at the parish office or at the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Sanctuary, if applicable.

Check the conditions for the celebration: decoration, songs, treadmill, photographer…

2nd Step - Talk to the parish priest of the bride (primarily) or the groom to prepare the wedding and deal with the religious attestation (see B).

3rd Step - Go to a civil registry office or consulate to get the marriage certificate or marriage certificate (see A).

Documents to be delivered to the Sé parish registry office up to 15 days before the wedding:

• Certificate of civil registration or Portuguese consulate (or civil marriage certificate if they are civilly married);

• Religious attestation by the Bishop of Lamego;

• Photocopy of the Identity Card or citizen card of two godparents or godmothers and their full address according to the one in the civil registry;

• Say whether the groom and / or the bride adopt a nickname or not; if so, say what the respective names will look like;

• Full name of the wedding celebrant.

A. How to obtain the civil certificate or marriage certificate?

Go to a Conservatory or Consulate if you are an emigrant.

Emigrants usually marry civilly in the country where they reside. They must then go to the Consulate to register their marriage to appear in the Portuguese documents that are married. It is the certificate issued by the Consulate or by a Civil Registry Office that you must bring to the parish notary office of the Cathedral.

These documents are valid for 6 months.

B. How to obtain religious attestation?

The bride and groom will speak to the parish priest of the bride (primarily) or the groom to organize the religious process. If the process is handled in another diocese, the certificate is issued by the bishop of that diocese. The bride and groom can bring this certificate that the parish is in charge of taking it to the Bishop of Lamego for him to give the respective authorization. There is a fee for the Diocesan Curia: € 20 if the wedding is in the Cathedral, € 60 if it is in another church.

In the case of being emigrants there are 3 possibilities to organize the process:

- with the parish priest in the parish where they live in Portugal;

- with a Portuguese chaplain priest in the country where they live;

- with the parish priest of the parish of residence in the country where they live.
