BAPTIZED PROCEDURES

1st Step - Make an appointment at the Sé parish office.

2nd Step - Talk to the parish priest to prepare and take care of the license. All baptisms that are not done in the parish church of the parents' residence require a license from the Bishop of the diocese.

Documents to be delivered to the Sé parish registry office up to 15 days before the christening:

  • Photocopy of birth certificate

  • License of the Bishop of Lamego

  • Certificate of suitability of the godparents

How to get the license?

Parents should contact the parish priest in the parish where they reside for this purpose and to prepare them accordingly.

If the parents are from another diocese, the license is issued by the bishop of that diocese. Parents can bring this license, which the parish is responsible for taking to the Bishop of Lamego for him to give the respective authorization. There is a fee for the Diocesan Curia: 15 € if the baptism is in the Cathedral, 40 € if it is in another church.

In the case of being emigrants there are 3 possibilities to deal with the license:

- with the parish priest in the parish where they live in Portugal;

- with a Portuguese chaplain priest in the country where they live;

- with the parish priest of the parish of residence in the country where they live.

How to obtain the certificates of good repute?

The godfather and the godmother must address the parish priest in the parish where they live.

To be suitable they have to be confirmed and single, or married catholically or widowed.

In some parishes, parish priests ask for certificates of good repute to be mentioned on their baptism license. If this is the case, it will no longer be necessary to deliver them to the See.
