PROCEDURES FOR BAPTISM

Step - Schedule the day in the parish office of the See.

Step 2 - Talk with the parish priest to prepare and take care of the license. All baptisms that are nor performed in the residing parish of the parents do not have a license of the diocese’s Bishop.

Documents to deliver to the parish office of the See up to 15 days before the baptism:

  • Photocopy of birth certificate

  • License of the Bishop of Lamego

  • Certificate of suitability of the godparents

How to obtain the license?

The parents should contact their residing civil parish’s priest to do so and to properly prepare.

If the parents are from another diocese the license is issued by the bishop of that diocese. The parents can bring that license and the parish shall hand it to the bishop of Lamego so that he can issue the respective authorization. It has a rate for the Diocesan Chancery: 15€ if the baptism is in the See, 40€ if it’s in another church.

If the family is emigrant, there’s 3 possibilities to organize the process:

  • With the parish priest of the civil parish where they reside in Portugal;

  • With a portuguese chapelan priest in their residing country;

  • With the parish priest of their residing civil parish from their residing country.

How to obtain the certificates of suitability?

The godparents must talk to the priest of the resident civil parish.

To be considered suitable they must be confirmed and single, or catholically married or widowed.

In some parishes, the parish priests request the certificates of suitability to be mentioned in the baptism certificate. If that’s the case it will not be necessary to deliver them in the See.
